Album Review: Infinite Health by Tycho

After moving back toward his hallowed ground of shimmering synths and melodic guitars on 2020's Simulcast, Infinite Health sees Hansen make a full return, fully leaving behind the vocal textures of 2019's Saint Sinner-featuring Weather. Co-produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor, Infinite Health's production should speak for itself and ushers in an exciting new era. Indeed, the title track feels like a figurative saging: "Consciousness Felt" is synaesthesia for the soul, a tactile reawakening.

Crafting atmospheric soundscapes, effortlessly gliding into the background, making any setting feel as if it's been dipped in a warm, nostalgic hue. Now 47, with six studio albums to his name, Tycho's evolution as an artist has been more about refining his established sound than revolutionizing it. His latest release, Infinite Health, comes four years after Simulcast, and while it retains much of what has defined his career, it also reflects a subtle shift - one that seems to mirror Hansen's own outlook on life post-pandemic. It may not wholly encapsulate Tycho's talents, but it's worth recapping his initial successes, in order to understand some of his aesthetic parameters. His breakthrough album, 2011's 'Dive', was something of a YouTube sleeper hit. As of today, 'Dive' currently has 36 million views on the site. It predates but is a clear influence on the 'lo-fi beats to study to' genre; warm internet refuges of gentle, pretty electronica that exist in seductive, calming alternate worlds.
