Album Review: D.A.I.S.Y. Rage [EP] by Kitty

Daisy Rage, indeed. Kitty - formerly Kitty Pryde - comes on delicately, like a f lower, but this EP has a steely spine. She's an Internet rap phenom and sounds like one, packing a search engine's worth of pop-culture name-drops, puns and quips. She jokes about Skrillex's hair, and recasts Wu-Tang's "C.R.E.A.M." as "R.R.E.A.M.," a self-lacerating rant about her anxiety rash.

For creative people, the internet's Golden Rule is: don't read the comments, or you'll risk artistic paralysis. Florida rapper Kathryn Beckwith, once known as Kitty Pryde and now just Kitty, has made a point of breaking that rule. She uses her blog to publicly sift through the vitriol and praise; she mocks her detractors, responds to calls for advice and questions about her life, and her relationship.

In the world of Tumblr rap, sometimes things can go very wrong. Artists like Riff Raff and Lil Debbie take things way too seriously, producing high gloss videos underpinned by turgid and embarrassing attempts at rapping. The best efforts in this relatively new movement embrace the playful side of life, papering over a lack of rapping ability with wit, individuality and more pop culture references than an episode of Community.

Kathryn Beckwith calls herself Kitty, the self-proclaimed “little white girl ruining hip-hop.” She raps by talking fast; her flow is the emcee equivalent of the sassy bitches from Mean Girls. And her lyrics are uproariously ridiculous: “I’m All-American but I’m not a reject / Why am I your dirty little secret? / Is it because of all the undies that I peed in?” Raised on MySpace, meme culture, dirty rap songs, and AOL Instant Messenger, Beckwith is a 19-year-old with no filters and heaps of fodder for her hyper-referential rhymes. Her Kitty persona thrives on these traits.
