Album Review: The Universe Will Take Care Of You by Holden & Zimpel

Universally acknowledged or otherwise, this is a truth verifiable by reference to the history of "fusion" or "crossover" or whatever alternative descriptor one might care to employ. What might have been envisaged as an imaginative mix of styles has been, with depressing frequency, sadly realised as a hideous, congealed mess. Such monstrosities have abounded over the decades.

There’s always been something a little disappointing about the standardization of electronic music. For the first 40 or 50 years of its existence, it seemed like anything could happen, that not even the ends of a composer’s imagination were the limit. For the first time in human history, sound could be reproduced with no physical limitations whatsoever.

On paper, synths and a clarinet don't seem like ideal bedfellows. Indeed, the mixing of organic and synthetic sounds can often be more jarring than enjoyable. James Holden and Waclaw Zimpel, however, have managed to merge the two in a way that lights up your day and puts an instant smile on your face. 'You Are Gods' reminds me of Holy Fuck, but if they embraced the pop side of their music, rather than the experimental.
