Sometimes all you need is the sound of old friends reuniting to perform some expertly played music It’s quite a surprise to see Alison Krauss reuniting with Union Station to produce their first album since 2011’s Paper Airplane. Not because there was any dramatic fallout between the band of course, but Krauss seems so much an artist in her own right – whether it be on one of her many solo albums, or her partnership with Robert Plant – it’s a bit of a pleasant shock to hear her as part of a group again. As with all the best bands though, they pick things up instantly, like there’s never been a 14 year absence.
For more than 35 years, Alison Krauss & Union Station have been a bluegrass institution, perfecting the classic American form led by Krauss' distinctive gentle soprano. The band have over the years garnered all sorts of awards and generally universal acclaim. After interim years that found Krauss releasing a solo album and recording and touring with Robert Plant, she rejoins Union Station for their first album in 14 years.
Alison Krauss hasn’t recorded with Union Station in 14 years--since Barack Obama’s first term, as Rolling Stone’s David Browne noted in his article announcing the act’s latest album, Arcadia. During this time, a lot has changed, including the departure of key Union Station member Dan Tyminski, who has been replaced by Russell Moore from IIIrd Tyme Out. Moore shares lead vocal duties with Krauss.
